7 Smart Habits that Help Keep Your Identity Safe

  • Cybersecurity

Identity theft doesn’t just affect credit scores; it disrupts lives. From fraudulent charges to compromised online accounts, it can happen to anyone. That’s why during Identity Theft Awareness Week, we’re sharing simple, practical steps to protect yourself and your finances.

Criminals don’t need to steal your wallet anymore. Today, most identity theft begins digitally—through:

  • Phishing emails or texts
  • Fake websites and phone calls
  • Compromised passwords
  • Data breaches at retailers or service providers

The good news? A few smart habits can significantly reduce your risk.

7 Simple Ways to Protect Your Identity

  1. Use strong, unique passwords. Avoid reusing passwords, especially for banking, email, and social media. A password manager can help.
  2. Turn On Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA). MFA adds a second layer of protection—even if someone steals your password.
  3. Be Skeptical of Urgent Messages. Banks will never request sensitive information via text or email. When in doubt, pause and call us directly at 816-943-8000.
  4. Monitor Your Accounts Regularly. Watch your transactions, review checking and savings statements, and review transaction alerts promptly, not just monthly.
  5. Watch out for Social Engineering. Fraudsters may impersonate family members, employers, or even your bank.
  6. Keep Devices Updated with Security updates to fix known vulnerabilities-don’t ignore them.
  7. Partner with a Bank That Watches Out for You. Fraud monitoring, alerts, and secure online banking tools make a real difference.
